ALEXANDER DOMINANT IN SNAKES SWEEP
The Calgary Vipers got another marvelous performance from a starting pitcher in their 11-1 victory over the Chico Outlaws at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta before 1576 fans. Jordy Alexander threw six excellent innings in giving up only three hits and the lone tally while walking no one and striking out six. The Vipers put the game out of reach with a nine run sixth inning and with the victory sweep both double-headers played against the Outlaws. Calgary has now won four games in a row and holds a 5-2 second half record.
Nelson Castro hit a leadoff solo homerun on the first pitch of the bottom of the second inning to give Calgary a 1-0 lead. For Castro it was his second homerun in as many days and sixth on the season.
The Vipers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third with an unearned run. With two outs Colin Moro reached on a throwing error by second baseman Jose Valdez and was followed by a single from Carlos Duncan and a run batted in base hit from Felix Jose.
Chico cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning on a Steve Boggs triple and Jesse Kovacs RBI single.
The Vipers put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning with nine total runs on eight hits. Castro and Drew Miller singled and Kevin Price was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jorge Tang knocked in two runs with a base hit and Darryl Brinkley singled home one more. After a Moro walk, Duncan drove in two more with a base knock, and Jose scored one with a double. Finally Castro plated a run with another single, Miller doubled in one, and Price grounded out for a RBI and the 11-1 lead.
Alexander (4-3) was nearly perfect threw the first five innings giving up only one hit and retiring 15 of 17 batters. P.J. Bevis threw a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
The Yuma Scorpions now come to town Monday July 21st, Tuesday July 22nd, and Wednesday July 23rd for a three game series with all games starting at 7:05 PM (MDT). Ryan Schurman (1-4) will start Monday night's game.
