MELEK PITCHES COMPLETE GAME VICTORY
Calgary Vipers starting pitcher Nate Melek tossed a complete game as his team defeated the Chico Outlaws 3-1 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Melek (4-2) went the complete seven innings and gave up only one run on four hits while only walking one and striking out three. With the victory in the first half of the double-header the Vipers have now won three in a row and improve their second half record to 4-2.
Darryl Brinkley led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and after stealing third base he scored on a Carlos Duncan run batted in groundout for the 1-0 lead.
Calgary added to the lead in the bottom of the third with back-to-back walks to Travis Drader and Colin Moro to start the inning. Brinkley followed with his second double of the game to knock in Drader and Moro scored on a Jorge Mejia sacrifice fly for the 3-0 advantage.
The Outlaws cut the lead down to two runs at 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning with a Shane Cronin single, Lino Garcia double, and a Gabriel Riley RBI groundout.
Melek tossed 94 pitches and 62 of them were for strikes in recording the victory in now back-to-back appearance.
In Game Two of the Double-Header Jordy Alexander (3-3) will take to the mound for the Vipers.
The Yuma Scorpions now come to town Monday July 21st, Tuesday July 22nd, and Wednesday July 23rd for a three game series with all games starting at 7:05 PM (MDT). Ryan Schurman (1-4) is expected to start Monday night's game.
