SNAKES SWEEP TWIN-BILL IN A WALK-OFF
A hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Calgary Vipers a 6-5 victory over the Chico Outlaws at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta in front of 1418 fans. The Vipers trailed 5-4 in the extra inning but loaded the bases and with a run batted in walk and Colin Moro getting hit by a pitch they were able to escape with the victory. The win gives Calgary a sweep of the double-header and improves their second half record to 3-2.
In the top of the second inning the Outlaws grabbed a run with two outs on a Lino Garcia walk, stolen base of second, and a Gabriel Riley run batted in single.
The lead was doubled in the top of the fourth with an infield single by Shane Cronin who reached second base due to a throwing error by shortstop Nelson Castro. Cronin scored an unearned run on a RBI double by Garcia.
Jorge Mejia led off the bottom of the inning with a double and Castro tied the game at two with his fifth long ball of the season.
Calgary grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a Travis Drader single, Darryl Brinkley walk, and after both moved up on a groundout they both came into score on a fielding error by first baseman Chris Corso.
Right back responded Chico in the top of the sixth with a Jose Valdez solo homerun to cut the lead to one run. Cronin followed with a double and after moving to third base on a groundout he scored on a infield RBI single by Riley with no one covering at first base.
The game entered extra innings for the eighth and Valdez hit his second big fly of the game to give the Outlaws a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth Carlos Duncan walked, Felix Jose singled, and Drew Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs Travis Drader walked to tie the game and Moro was barely hit by a pitch to force home the winning run.
"Paint the Park Pink" weekend concludes Sunday July 20th at 1:35 PM (MDT) with another double-header to make up for Friday's rain out. Nate Melek (3-2) will start Game 1 with Jordy Alexander (3-3) taking the ball for the back half of the twin bill.
Monday July 21st, Tuesday July 22nd, and Wednesday July 23rd the Yuma Scorpions come to town for a three game series with all games starting at 7:05 PM (MDT).
